Break for Intestines

Yesterday I glossed over the fact that I did a quick two-day juice and soup “detox”.  Why, you ask?

Well, for starters, Ben and I watched this film at the beginning of last week:47a69e45c12c2291041a831958098dc6

I’m sort of a health food film junkie, so of course I watched this film about a man who decides to just drink juice for sixty days [under the watch of his physician].  I found aspects of it that I really appreciated, like showing the world that healthy living can aid individuals in getting off of medication, and there were parts that I wish were more detailed, too.  All in all, though, it was a great film that made me think about juicing more often to give my body more micronutrients.

I’m not a huge fan of fasts, though, and because I am so active, I knew that it wouldn’t be possible or healthy to go more than just a couple days without protein and solid sources of nutrition.  In fact, it wasn’t until I went to my chiropractor that I decided to take a break from solid food for a day or two.

I went to see my new chiropractor, Dr. Kourtney on Wednesday of last week, and after feeling around my intestines for a while she said, “you know, you’re feeling really inflamed in your intestines… how would you feel about doing liquids for a day or so to give your insides a little break?”  I looked at her and said, “funny you say that, because I was feeling the same way”.

I knew with my activity level that I’d have to ingest more than just juice, so Kourtney suggested soups as well, and said that I could still have my protein shakes to keep my macronutrient levels up.

Thursday was a pretty low key day, so I had a protein shake for breakfast, soup for lunch and dinner, and a couple veggie juices for morning and afternoon snacks.

Friday was a bit rougher, since I had to teach a high-intensity TurboKick class and was feeling foggy-brained.  When doing a juice/soup detox, I recommend being able to lay low.  I came home and was feeling a little out of it.  I whipped up a hearty Thai sweet potato soup that is probably my favorite off-the-top-of-my-head homemade soup to date.

By Friday night I was ready to incorporate roasted veggies + quinoa [one of the most easily digested grains] back into the mix.

Since Friday I’ve eaten very clean meals, and my body is thanking me for it.  My intestines don’t feel so inflamed anymore and I’ve got lots of energy.  I don’t do very many fasts or detoxes, but I’ve always loved soups and definitely think I’ll be incorporating more veggie juices into my snack rotation from now on.

Do you have any experience[s] with fasts or detoxes?  What do you think?
